I got up about 6:00 and was out and about before too many people were up. We went to the other side of the lake for our birdwalk. We got a good look at a rose-breasted grosbeak. Some of the other birds we heard were ones that sounded sort of like others. Yellow throated vireo/blue headed vireo. Chestnut sided/magnolia. And now I'm confused about my redstarts and chestnut sided. Guess it just takes hearing them over and over is lots of different situations to really know.

Breakfast - oatmeal, pancakes and bacon.

Our morning program was with Zach on Benthic macro invertibrates. First he explained them, then we went down to the dam and caught them. We didn't get stone flys, but we got all the other kinds, plus crayfish which were my favorites. Then we came back to camp and looked at them using the microscope/LCD projector.

Lunch: Warm chicken salad, veggies, fruit. Very delicious.

In the afternoon we studied insects, (specifically dragon flies and butterflies) with Tom Pearson. He had specimen cases and books to illustrate his initial info, then we took nets and headed to the lagoon and field. I caught a European skipper, a great spangled frittilary and an orange sulpher. It was great fun.

Supper - Meatloaf, mashed potatoes, greenbeans, wilted lettuce salad and strawberry rhubarb pie.

It stormed in the evening so we sat inside the lodge and played a bird identification game and socializeed in general. Ashton had dug saffafras roots and he cleaned them up and made sassafras tea.

I retired early and listened to the rain and read in my tent.
